You should have already completed “Step #1- Calculate your Food Storage.” If not, then please just click on the step#1 link.  I recommend you download the Free Guide to Survival Food Storage Calculator to make this whole process easy.

Step #2 Overview
The first category in is “Grains” and the first food group is “Wheat.”  So we will begin our food storage journey today by finding out how much wheat your family needs and where you can buy the highest quality wheat at the lowest price.

#1. Open up the Food Storage Calculator using Microsoft Excel or Openoffice Calc

#2. Next enter the number of Adult and children.

Survival-Blog-TipsSURVIVAL BLOG TIP:  We counted our children as adults in our family food storage calculation, because the kids will be grown before you know it. Then we have enough food for our entire family as adults. For example: if you have 2 adults and 2 children, just enter 4 adults instead.

#3. Then enter the number of months of food storage you want to calculate

Survival-Blog-TipsSURVIVAL BLOG TIP: Our goal here is to get you prepared with 1 Year of food storage for your family or loved ones, so we recommend entering 12 months.

#4 Press enter to calculate

We will use the example of 1 Adult. 1 Adult needs 150 pounds of wheat for a 12 month or 1 year supply. Each #10 can holds 5.8 pounds of wheat, so we need 26 cans (150/5.8=25.86) or 5 boxes (4.33 boxes will be filled, the 5th box will be partly full).

You have 2 options for Long-Term Wheat Storage:

1. Buy the wheat already canned.

2. Can the wheat yourself or DIY (cheapest)

OPTION 1:  Buy the wheat already canned.

The cheapest place to buy wheat already canned is the LDS Cannery. You can buy Red or White wheat by the individual #10 can or in a box of 6- #10 cans.  When you buy a box of 6-#10 wheat cans you get all this included:

  • 6- #10 cans of wheat
  • 6- oxygen absorbers
  • 2 plastic lids to reseal you cans after you have opened them
  • 1- durable cardboard box that holds 6 cans
  • Wheat Labeled Durable Cardboard Box. (This is really handy because you an immediately identify what is in the box.  When you  have many boxes of #10 cans of food storage, these labeled boxes make it easy to organize.)
  • Information/Nutrition Labels (I would recommend you place a label on the outside of the box and on each can. Check out this image below as an example of what labels look like and the exact information on a white wheat label.)

WHEAT STORAGE (FAQ) Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the best wheat food storage container for 30 years of wheat storage?

We recommend sealed #10 metal cans with oxygen absorbers.  Six cans will fit in 1 cardboard box, this makes it really easy to move and organize your food storage.

What kinds of wheat should I store?

Hard Red and Hard White Wheat.  My neighbor who is an avid bread baker prefers the taste of Red, but I can’t tell the difference in taste. My family did about 75% white and 25% red, just to add some variation to our wheat storage.

How much wheat should I have of each kind?

That is up to you.

How many years will wheat store?

30 years in a properly sealed container at the proper temperature (60 degrees is ideal).

How much wheat do I need?

You will find the answer in the wheat row of the calculator.  Here at the GuidetoSurvivalBlog.com we will use the example of 1 Adult for all of our calculations.
