Step #4- Long Term Corn Meal Storage Overview
The next food in the “Grains” category is “corn meal.” So we will begin our food storage journey today by finding out how much corn meal your family needs and where you can buy the highest quality corn meal, that will store the longest, at the lowest price.
#1. Open up the Food Storage Calculator using Microsoft Excel or Openoffice Calc
#2. Next enter the number of Adult and children.
SURVIVAL BLOG TIP: We counted our children as adults in our family food storage calculation, because the kids will be grown before you know it. Then we have enough food for our entire family as adults. For example: if you have 2 adults and 2 children, just enter 4 adults instead.

We will use the example of 1 Adult. 1 Adult needs 25 pounds of corn meal for a 12 month or 1 year supply. Each #10 can holds about 4.0 to 4.5 pounds of cornmeal (depending on where you buy it), so we need 6 cans (25/4.1=6.09) or 1 box that holds 6 cans of corn meal for your 1-year food storage plan.

OPTION 1: Buy the corn meal already canned.
Buying your corn meal already canned in #10 cans saves you time, and hastle of canning it yourself. However be aware that it is more expensive to buy the corn meal already canned.

OPTION 2: Can the corn meal yourself or DIY (cheapest)
The cheapest way to get your years worth of corn meal storage is the LDS Cannery. You CAN NOT buy the corn meal at the LDS Cannery. You CAN NOT buy the corn meal already canned at the LDS Cannery. You must buy your corn meal from another store, check out our Corn Meal Pricing Guide below. Note: you will save money by buying it in bulk. You have 2 choices:
- Do your canning at home. Begin by buying your corn meal in bulk . Then buy all of your canning supplies at the LDS Cannery and then rent or check out the canning machine (for free). Remember you will need #10 metal cans, #10 metal lids, oxygen absorbers, oxygen absorber clip to seal off the bag of absorbers, nutrition/product labels, plastic lids to reseal cans (2 plastic lids per 1 box or for every 6 cans) and boxes.
- Do your canning at the LDS Cannery. Begin by buying your corn meal in bulk. Buy all of your supplies at the LDS Cannery and can all of your corn meal at the canning station. The canning station has a more heavy duty canning machine than the one you can check out for home use. You also have ample space to get your canning done and you have all of the supplies you need right at your fingertips.
