Long-Term Rice Storage
You should have already completed “Step #5- Oat Long Term Food Storage.” If not, then please just click on the step#5 link. I recommend you download the Free Guide to Survival Food Storage Calculator to make this whole process easy.
Step #2 Overview
The first category in is “Grains” and the 5th food group is “Rice.” So we will begin our food storage mission today by finding out how much rice your family needs and where you can buy the highest quality rice at the lowest price.
#1. Open up the Food Storage Calculator using Microsoft Excel or Openoffice Calc
#2. Next enter the number of Adult and children.
SURVIVAL BLOG TIP: We counted our children as adults in our family food storage calculation, because the kids will be grown before you know it. Then we have enough food for our entire family as adults. For example: if you have 2 adults and 2 children, just enter 4 adults instead.
#3. Then enter the number of months of food storage you want to calculate
#4 Press enter to calculate
We will use the example of 1 Adult. 1 Adult needs 50 pounds of white rice for a 12 month or 1 year supply. Each #10 can holds about (depending which vendor you get your food storage from) 5.7 pounds of white, so we need 9 cans (50/5.7=8.77) or 1 1/2 boxes (remember each box holds 6 cans).
You have 2 options for Long-Term Rice Storage:
1. Buy the white rice already canned.
2. Can the white rice yourself or DIY (cheapest)
OPTION 1: Buy the White Rice already canned.
The cheapest place to buy rice already canned is the LDS Cannery. You can buy Rice by the individual #10 can or in a box of 6- #10 cans. When you buy a box of 6-#10 wheat cans you get all this included:
- 6- #10 cans of wheat
- 6- oxygen absorbers
- 2 plastic lids to reseal you cans after you have opened them
- 1- durable cardboard box that holds 6 cans
- Wheat Labeled Durable Cardboard Box. (This is really handy because you an immediately identify what is in the box. When you have many boxes of #10 cans of food storage, these labeled boxes make it easy to organize.)
- Information/Nutrition Labels (I would recommend you place a label on the outside of the box and on each can. Check out this image below as an example of what labels look like and the exact information on a white wheat label.)
SURVIVAL BLOG TIP: After canning all of our food storage at home I would recommend you just buy your rice from the LDS Cannery because it is saves you time, it saves you money and quality is awesome! You can check out the pricing guide below to compare your total cost to buy your wheat storage already canned.

OPTION 2: Can the White Rice yourself or DIY
The cheapest place to buy and can your white rice is the LDS Cannery. You can either can the white rice at the LDS Cannery or you can rent the Canner Machine (for free) to can at your home. You must buy the white rice, #10 cans, #10 can metal lids, oxygen absorbers, oxygen absorbers bag clip, product labels and cardboard boxes. We purchased all of these supplies from the LDS Cannery and rented the Canning Machine to can at our home. After canning all of our food storage at home I would recommend you can as much of it at the LDS Cannery as possible. They have several canning stations setup and they make canning fast, safe, sanitary and easy.
***DIY TOTAL COST: 9 cans x $4.00 = $36.00 (No. 10 can packaged by customer price includes product, can, lid, oxygen absorber, and label. A box and two plastic lids are included with every six can.)
WHITE RICE STORAGE (FAQ) Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the best food storage container for 30 years of oat storage?
We recommend sealed #10 metal cans with oxygen absorbers. Six cans will fit in 1 cardboard box, this makes it really easy to move and organize your food storage.
How many years will white rice store?
30 years in a properly sealed container at the proper temperature (below 75 degrees, but the cooler the better 60-65 degrees is even better).
What kinds of rice should I store?
Canning brown rice will spoil in a short period of time! You must store “white rice” if you want it to last up to 30 years!
This is a personal preference. Look at the benefits of each type of oats and then decide… you may even want to can both types.
How much white rice do I need?
You will find the answer in the rice row of the calculator. Here at the GuidetoSurvivalBlog.com we will use the example of 1 Adult for all of our calculations. One Adult needs 25 pounds of Oats for 1 year long term storage.
